Schelli has finished her book! It’s been a long haul for her, from transcribing her journals to the final print, available at Lulu.com.
This book is a memoir, as the title of this post suggests. I was involved with the proof reading of the contents before publishing and was amazed every time I read it, at the situations she has gotten into in her life, sometimes some very dangerous ones, and managed to get out of, unscathed physically, but perhaps left with memories that would leave some of us with nightmares.
This book is about a girl, a woman, who has chosen not to conform to social norms, the psychological conditioning a woman receives beginning from birth and continuing through her life as an adult, whether from parents or societal peers, and the price to be paid for that choice.
To toot my own horn a bit, as this blog is about photography, she asked me to design the book cover. I incorporated a photo that I shot of a woman lying on a sidewalk in San Diego, all of her possessions scattered around her. The shoes at the bottom of the page I photographed at a wedding I shot. They represent the other end of the spectrum.
This book, for me, was one of those difficult to put down reads that once you start, you better have some time to finish.
